Templates

A template is a reusable set of snippets: save a document as one, and the next starts part-written.

  1. Assemble the document to start from.
  2. With the editor closed, open the canvas ⋯ and press Save as template.
  3. Keep the document's title, which the Template name field prefills, or type another, then press Save template.

Who can see a template

A template saved from the canvas is shared with the workspace. Two things keep it yours: a snippet from a Personal library, and the line beside the canvas ⋯ then reads Saved as a template. It stays yours: it holds a snippet from a Personal library.; and making a Google Drive folder you sync private, which also unshares your templates built on its snippets.

A save, a rename, or restoring an archived template is refused where a template you can see, not archived, already carries that title: A template named "X" already exists., followed by the fix.

The Templates tab

Pane 1's Templates tab lists the unarchived templates you can see whose title contains what is in the search field, a page at a time; Show more fetches the next. Each row carries the title, its row count, Insert, and Docs where the workspace's plan carries Google Docs export (Business and Enterprise, or a workspace created before it became part of a plan).

Insert puts the template's rows onto the canvas at the insertion point, each at the revision the template recorded (assembling has what that means). It is off while the editor is open. A template holding a snippet that is deleted, or that you cannot read, refuses the whole insert, saying the snippet is no longer in the library.

Docs builds the template into a Google Doc, leaving out rows whose snippet you cannot read or whose text is empty, and opens it in a new tab; where the workspace has no Google Drive connection it opens Google's authorization instead.

Exporting covers the formats a document leaves in.
